Aravind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity AI, has hinted that his company will soon launch Comet for iOS, which he says could be the “first real competition to Safari” on iPhones. The announcement, made on X on October 6, 2025, has got tech fans excited, as it could change the way people browse the internet on their Apple devices.
Srinivas made the comment after a user shared that they had replaced Safari with Perplexity AI in their iPhone dock. “Wait till Comet iOS is there! The first real competition to Safari begins then. Chrome couldn’t take much market share from Safari on iPhones,” he wrote. Safari has long dominated iPhones because Apple requires all browsers on iOS to use its WebKit engine. Comet aims to stand out by using AI to make browsing faster and smarter.
Perplexity is already known for its AI-powered search tool, which helps users get answers quickly and in context. Srinivas says Comet will act like a “dynamic copilot,” helping users find information easily while showing clear sources. Unlike Google, which focuses a lot on ads, Comet wants to put users first. Reports from The Times of India and Perplexity’s blog describe Comet as a browser built for modern internet users, helping people explore and learn in real time.
Since the announcement, people on X have asked about beta testing and waitlists. Some users were also confused by another app with a similar name on the App Store. While Safari still has an advantage with Apple features like Keychain, Comet’s Android version has been well received, ranking #37 on the Play Store.
With the AI browser market expected to grow to $76.8 billion by 2034, Comet iOS could be a big deal. If it lives up to the hype, it might give iPhone users a real choice beyond Safari and change the way people browse the web on mobile devices.
