Some companies have already quietly swapped their content writers for ChatGPT and called it a day. Yet here comes OpenAI, the very creator of the AI everyone is nervously whispering about, announcing a $393,000 (around Rs 3.4 crore) salary for a content strategist. Yes, humans are still apparently worth it, if you’re a “critical highthinker,” that is.
The San Francisco-based AI giant is on the hunt for someone to shape the voice, tone, and content strategy for ChatGPT.com. The job description reads like a masterclass in responsibility- the strategist will define how the brand talks to the world, write and edit content, and oversee campaigns that drive awareness, adoption, and traffic. In short, you’ll be the human brain behind the digital persona of the AI that’s already taking over everyone else’s writing jobs.
Social media, of course, couldn’t resist the irony. “If the very company that builds the world’s most advanced AI still hires humans for content, maybe it’s time to rethink the assumption that AI can do everything,” tweeted one user. Another added with barely concealed amusement: “SEO is dead, content marketing is a waste of time. Meanwhile, the biggest disruptor of the decade is paying someone $400k to strategize content.”
But beyond the sarcasm, the listing is actually a subtle nod to reality. AI is fast, scalable, and impressive but it’s not perfect. Humans are still needed to steer the ship, provide judgment, and add nuance. As one commentator noted, “The combination of human intelligence and AI is what actually wins. Tiny teams can produce huge volumes of thought-provoking content when humans guide the AI.”
OpenAI isn’t just looking for anyone. The ideal candidate will have six to 10+ years of experience in content strategy, copywriting, or growth marketing, preferably at a high-growth company or a well-known brand. Responsibilities include creating high-quality content from landing pages to guides to campaigns, all while keeping the ChatGPT brand voice consistent.
So here’s the takeaway, while other companies quietly shuffle writers into the AI abyss, OpenAI is rolling out the red carpet for theirs. The message seems clear. AI can assist, but it still takes a human to think, strategize, and bring nuance to the table. And yes, for that rare skill, OpenAI is willing to pay handsomely.
