News agency Reuters' official X (formerly known as Twitter) account was blocked in India on Saturday. Although there was no official correspondence in this regard, several X users shared tweets regarding the blocking of Reuters' X handle.
Since late Saturday evening, the main X handle of Reuters remained inaccessible with the page displaying a “@Reuters has been withheld in IN in response to a legal demand."
After that the X account of Reuters World was also inaccessible, with the reason for the blockage of the two X handles not immediately known.
However, X handles affiliated to Reuters – like Reuters Tech News, Reuters Fact Check, Reuters Pictures, Reuters Asia and Reuters China - remained accessible.
As per X guidelines, X handles/content can be withheld if the platform was compelled to withhold it in response to a valid legal demand, such as a court order. Content can also be blocked on the basis of local laws in response to a report filed through specific support intake channels.
