Instagram introduces PG-13 content controls for teens: 5 key things to know
Instagram’s new PG-13 content controls for teen accounts aim to reduce exposure to explicit material, provide parents with more control, and use AI to enforce age-appropriate interactions. The global rollout begins in 2025, with further expansions in 2026.
Teen accounts now default to PG-13 content Instagram has updated all teen accounts under 18 to automatically use a PG-13 content setting. The move aims to limit what teens can see and interact with, keeping explicit or harmful material off-limits. Teens cannot opt out without parental approval.
Why PG-13? Meta says the PG-13 standard is familiar to parents and provides a clear benchmark. Content with strong language, risky stunts, or references to alcohol, marijuana, or adult behaviour will be hidden or not recommended to teens.
Survey shows strong parental support An Ipsos survey commissioned by Meta found that 95% of US parents believe the new setting makes Instagram safer for teens. Around 90% said it helps them understand what their children might see on the platform.
‘Limited Content’ for extra parental control For families seeking stricter limits, Meta introduced a ‘Limited Content’ option. It blocks additional content types, disables features like commenting, and restricts AI interactions to avoid inappropriate topics. 96% of parents surveyed appreciated the option, even if they do not plan to use it.
AI and moderation improvements Meta has upgraded its AI systems to better detect and filter material that violates the updated teen standards. Teens cannot follow or interact with accounts sharing inappropriate content, nor will these accounts appear in feeds or searches. Sensitive search terms, even misspelled, such as “alcohol” or “gore,” will also be blocked.
