If you’re into games like GTA, Minecraft or Genshin Impact, here’s a wake-up call: cybercriminals are using the names of your favourite titles to sneak malware into your devices. According to a new report from cybersecurity firm Kaspersky, over 19 million users worldwide were targeted between April 2024 and March 2025 through malicious files disguised as popular Gen Z games.

And it’s not just a global problem. In India alone, over 4,000 users were affected by these fake game files. As Gen Z leads the charge in online gaming  hopping between trending games and spending more than any other age group  they’ve also become the top targets for scams and malware.

The most exploited title? Grand Theft Auto, with over 4.4 million attack attempts, despite GTA V being more than a decade old. The game’s open-world mods and hype around the upcoming GTA VI have made it an easy lure. Minecraft came in second with 4.1 million attempts, followed by Call of Duty and The Sims, both of which are frequently searched for cracked versions, cheats and mods — perfect bait for attackers.

Once a user clicks on these fake files, their device could get infected with all sorts of harmful programs from password-stealing trojans to software that gives hackers full control or even deploys ransomware. In many cases, attackers are after one thing: your gaming accounts. These accounts — especially those with rare skins or high ranks — are being resold on dark web marketplaces, private forums, and even Telegram channels, making stolen data easier to buy and sell than ever.
