Google's new feature will allow users in India to pick their favourite news sources in Search

Google is giving news readers more control over what they see. A new “Preferred Sources” feature lets users in the US and India choose their favourite outlets, with those picks showing up more often in Search’s Top Stories.

Google Search is rolling out a “Preferred Sources” feature in India, allowing users to customise the Top Stories section to prioritise articles from their chosen news outlets. The update is designed to make it easier to stay informed by surfacing more content from sites you follow or subscribe to — whether national dailies, local publications, or niche blogs.

Once set, preferred sources will appear more frequently in Top Stories and in a dedicated “From your sources” section on search results pages, provided they have published fresh and relevant coverage. Other sources will still appear, but Google says the change ensures users get more of what they care about most.

How to select news sources in Search

Selecting sources is straightforward: search for a news topic, click the icon next to Top Stories, pick your preferred outlets, then refresh your results. Users can choose as many as they like and manage the list at any time. Early feedback from Google’s Labs programme — where the feature was tested — shows that more than half of participants picked four or more outlets. Those prior selections will carry over automatically to the new system.
