Google reduced its management roles by 10% in 2024. This move came as part of the company’s ongoing efforts to improve efficiency, CEO Sundar Pichai informed employees during an all-hands meeting earlier this week. According to the Business Insider's report, the job cuts affected positions at the managerial, director, and vice president levels, continuing the company’s restructuring process.
Efficiency push leads to management restructuring
Pichai explained that Google has been simplifying its structure over the past few years to enhance efficiency and streamline operations. According to a report, some managerial roles were transitioned into non-managerial positions, while others were eliminated throughout 2024.
The changes aligned with Pichai’s earlier vision of making Google 20% more efficient, a goal announced in September 2022.
Previous layoffs and broader workforce impact
In January 2023, Alphabet, Google’s parent company, executed its largest-ever round of layoffs, cutting 12,000 roles, approximately 6% of its global workforce. These layoffs spanned across regions, product areas, and multiple Alphabet divisions.
Pichai attributed the 2023 layoffs to hiring decisions made during a different economic climate. The company conducted a thorough review of its operations to ensure that staff and roles aligned with its strategic priorities.
In January 2024, Pichai warned employees of additional layoffs as the company pursued its efficiency goals. While the 2024 layoffs have not matched the scale of the previous year, some divisions have seen reductions in staffing.
