Google has announced a major update to Chrome, introducing new AI-powered capabilities that make the browser more proactive, intelligent, and secure. First launched in 2008 with a focus on speed and safety, Chrome is now evolving into an AI-centric platform that helps users complete tasks, stay productive, and remain protected online.
AI browsing assistant with Gemini
At the core of this update is Gemini in Chrome, an AI assistant designed to help users manage complex browsing tasks. For instance, students working across multiple tabs can rely on Gemini to answer questions, summarize information, and find references within videos. The assistant can also retrieve previously visited pages, making it easier to pick up research where it was left off.
Gemini is rolling out to Mac and Windows users in the U.S. with English language support, with Android and iOS availability coming soon. Google is also working on advanced “agentic” capabilities, enabling Gemini to complete multi-step tasks like grocery shopping from start to finish, while keeping the user in control.
Smarter omnibox with AI Mode
Chrome’s address bar, known as the omnibox, is also receiving upgrades with AI Mode. This feature allows users to ask complex, multi-part questions directly in the search bar and refine results with follow-up queries. Additionally, contextual suggestions are being added, offering relevant prompts based on the page being viewed.
For example, while shopping online, the omnibox might suggest questions about return policies or warranty coverage. Contextual suggestions are already live in the U.S., while AI Mode will roll out later this month, initially in English.
AI-powered safety tools
Security remains a key focus, with Chrome using AI to expand protections. New capabilities include blocking emerging scams, auto-filling credentials securely, and identifying compromised passwords or spam notifications. Google reports that these protections have reduced scammy notifications on Android by about 3 billion per day.
Google describes this shift as moving Chrome from a passive browser to an intelligent partner that understands context, adapts to user needs, and improves productivity. The company
