After announcing three AI companions in the past weeks, Elon Musk has also announced a new AI companion called ‘Baby Grok’. It is an artificial intelligence companion designed specifically for children. The announcement comes after xAI faced criticism over the content and tone of its adult-oriented Grok AI characters, some of which were flagged for being inappropriate for younger users.

What is Baby Grok?
Baby Grok is expected to be a child-safe version of the Grok chatbot, tailored to offer engaging, age-appropriate interactions for kids. While details about its features are limited, Musk confirmed that it will be part of a new push to create safe, educational, and entertaining AI companions for younger users.

Earlier this week, xAI launched a group of AI characters within the Grok app, including personalities like Ani, Bad Rudi, and Valentine. These avatars sparked backlash due to their flirty, aggressive, or emotionally intense responses. Critics argued that such content was unsuitable for an app rated 12+ on platforms like the Apple App Store.

Pushback from safety groups
Child safety organisations, including the National Centre on Sexual Exploitation, have raised concerns about the Grok app’s accessibility to minors. The group urged for tighter content controls or a revised age rating. In response to the problems, Musk acknowledged the feedback and hinted at a separate product specifically designed for children.
