The World Chess Championship final is set take place between November 25 and December 13. India's D Gukesh will face defending champion Ding Liren at the luxurious Resorts World Sentose in Singapore. India's Gukesh is the youngest challengers in history, who currently is aiming to dethrone champion Ding Liren, making this match an exciting showdown.
It is the first time two Asian players will battle it out for the world title. Gukesh is just 18 years of age and he is making headlines since winning the Candidates Tournament which earned him a shot at the world title. Ding Liren on the other hand is a seasoned competitor, who will defend his title against the young star.
If Gukesh wins against Ding Liren of China, he will break the record of youngest champion in history previously held by Garry Kasparov (1985). Kasparov became the 13th World Champion after beating Soviet Union player Anatoly in a remarkable contest which lasted for more than a year. The match began on September 24, 1984 but was halted on February 10, 1985, after 48 games. Although Karpov was leading 5-3, momentum had shifted in Kasparov's favor. As a result, Kasparov was deeply dissatisfied with FIDE's decision to stop the match, which was ostensibly made due to concerns over the players' health.
Format
The 2024 World Chess Championship match between D. Gukesh and Ding Liren features 14 games. The first player to reach 7.5 points will claim the title of World Champion. In the event of a tie after all 14 games, a tiebreak will take place the next day to decide the winner.

TIME CONTROL
The 2024 World Chess Championship match will feature 14 classical games. Each game will have the following time controls:
120 minutes for the first 40 moves.
30 minutes for the rest of the game.
A 30-second increment per move will begin from move 41.
TIEBREAK RULES
If the match ends in a tie after 14 games, the following tiebreak format will apply:
Rapid Match: Four games with 15 minutes per side and a 10-second increment per move. The first player to score 2½ points wins.
Mini Rapid Match (if still tied): Two games with 10 minutes per side and a 5-second increment. The first player to score 1½ points wins.
Blitz Match (if still tied): Two games with 3 minutes per side and a 2-second increment. The first player to score 1½ points wins.
Sudden Death Blitz (if still tied): Single blitz games with 3 minutes per side and a 2-second increment, alternating colors, until one player wins.
The drawing of lots will determine which player plays White before each mini-match.
PRIZE MONEY
The total prize pool for the championship is $2.5 million (approximately ₹20.8 crore).
Each player earns $200,000 (₹1.67 crore) for every game won, including games won by forfeit. The remaining prize money is divided equally between the players.
If tiebreaks are needed, the winner will receive $1.3 million (₹10.83 crore), while the runner-up gets $1.2 million (₹10 crore). This distribution also applies if the match ends with a decisive 13-game (7½–6½) or 14-game (8–6) scoreline.
VENUE
The final match between India’s D. Gukesh and China’s Ding Liren will take place in Singapore, hosted at Resorts World Sentosa.
