Mohun Bagan vs East Bengal Durand Cup tie cancelled amid protests over doctor's rape and murder in Kolkata

The much anticipated Durand Cup tie between India's two iconic football clubs Mohun Bagan and East Bengal has been cancelled. The decision was taken in the wake of the prevailing unrest in Kolkata, the venue for the clash. An official information on the subject was shared on the 'X' account of Durand Cup, which stated that all online and offline tickets will be refunded. "The dates and the refund process will be notified within the next two days," the statement read.

As per a report in PTI, the decision was taken following a meeting between the Kolkata Police officials and organisers of the tournament. It further stated that all Durand Cup matches in Kolkata could shift to Jamshedpur, however, an official communication on the same is yet to come. "Both the teams will be awarded a point each," an official told PTI.

Kolkata has been hit with protests after a gruesome incident of rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at the city's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. On Saturday, the Indian Medical Association called for a 24-hour nationwide strike to protest the rape and murder of their colleague.
