The opening day of the first Test between India and Bangladesh at Chepauk, Chennai has so far been a substandard one as far as the performance is considered from the hosts. India, who were invited to bat first, got off to a shaky start, losing the top-order comprising Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli cheaply. While Rohit and Virat returned for single digit scores, Gill failed to open his account as seamer Hasan Mahmud removed all the three batters.

Rishabh Pant then arrived in the middle and while he was still relatively new in the middle, the wicketkeeper-batter got into an argument with his counterpart Litton Das. The incident occurred in the 16th over as Pant and Litton were seen exchanging words after the Indian was struck by the ball while trying to steal a quick single.

In the videos doing round on social media, Pant can be heard saying: “uspe (wicket) feko na bhai, mujhe kyu mar rahe ho (hit at the wickets, why are you hitting me).” To which Litton responds: "paun pe laga, woh toh marega hi (it hit your leg, and he will hit (directing at the stumps)." Although the end response from Pant was a bit unclear, but he possibly said: "Marle par mein bhi toh bhagunga (hit but even I need to run)," following which Litton walked back to his position.

Meanwhile, Pant along with Yashasvi Jaiswal repaired the Indian innings up to a certain extent after the hosts were reduced to 34/3 early in the opening session. The pair added 62 runs for the fourth wicket before Hasan packed Pant for 39, scalping his fourth wicket of the innings. Pant and Jaiswal had earlier helped India reach 88/3 at Lunch.
