RCB victory parade Highlights: Fans swamp Chinnaswamy to celebrate IPL triumph; stampede outside dampens jubilation
RCB victory parade Highlights: The celebrations of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) winning their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title took an ugly turn as several are feared death due to stampede outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday. Fans had swamped the streets in Bengaluru, as crowd swelled outside the Vidhana Soudha, where players were presented with memento and honoured with Mysore Peta by chief minister Siddaramaiah. The players then left for the Chinnaswamy Stadium on the team bus amid huge fanfare. Virat Kohli and Rajat Patidar addressed the crowd at the venue as the stadium was filled with fans, who joined the celebration.
However, the turn of events also led to unfortunate developments outside the stadium, where a stampede claimed the lives of 11 individuals and the toll is expected to rise. Several others were left injured, thus damping the jubilation.
On Tuesday RCB ended the tag of being labelled as the chokers in the IPL as Rajat Patidar and Co. held their composure and beat Shreyas Iyer's Punjab Kings (PBKS) by six runs in an enthralling final. RCB batting first piled a stiff 190/9 on the board and Punjab kept fighting but in the end could only manage 184/7 in response. Before this, RCB had made it to IPL finals thrice (2009, 2011, and 2016) but failed to cross the line. However, the fourth final finally saw RCB get their hands on the elusive trophy, making many emotional.
Virat Kohli, who has been part of the RCB setup since the inception of the league, was among them and while describing what the occasion meant to him, the ex-RCB captain said: "This win is as much for the fans as it is for the team. It has been 18 long years, I have given this team my youth, my prime and my experience and I have tried to win this every season that I have come and I have given everything I have and to finally have this moment come, it is an unbelievable feeling. I never thought this day would come."
