However, the game had many twists and turns. SunRisers Hyderabad, under the leadership of new captain Pat Cummins, put up a massive fight. And the game went down to the last ball. Here's what happened:
- KKR were 51/4 just 26 balls into the game, thanks to some spectacular fielding from the Sunrisers Hyderabad - especially Aiden Markram, Marco Jansen and the captain himself Pat Cummins leading from the front.
- Then KKR's Ramandeep Singh and Andre Russell started hitting fours and sixes at will. The Jamaica-born allrounder built a 81-run partnership with Rinku Singh next.
- KKR put up 208 runs despite the excellent fielding.
- Sunrisers Hyderabad needed 209 off 120 balls to win.
- SRH started out well, with a 33-ball 60-run partnership between Mayank Agarwal and Abhishek Sharma.
- SRH's performance dipped a bit after Mayank Agarwal's wicket fell in the sixth over and Abhishek Sharma succumbed to a short ball from Varun Chakravarathy in the eighth over.
- A. Markram and Rahul Tripathi went for 18 and 20 runs, respectively. And SRH were 111 for 4 in 12.5 overs.
- Heinrich Klaasen and Shahbaz Ahmed then struck a 16-ball 58 partnership to bring SRH back within reasonable distance of a victory.
- Shahbaz got out at 16 off just 5 balls. Klaasen stuck it out for just two more deliveries in the over; his wicket fell in the last over.
- The first delivery SRH captain Pat Cummins faced was also the last ball of the game.
- SRH had started the final over with 13 runs required off six balls. Klaasen hit a six - his eighth of the game - to take it to seven runs needed off 5 balls.
- When Harshit Rana got the wickets of Shahbaz Ahmed (caught by Shreyas Iyer) and Heinrich Klaasen (caught by Suyash Sharma), however, SRH's chances evaporated just as quickly as Shahbaz and Klaasen had created them. It came down to the last ball, which went for dot.
- Andre Russell (KKR) was chosen Player of the Match for his unbeaten 64 off 25 deliveries and bowling figures of 2/25.
This was an important match for Cummins, who is captaining an IPL side for the first time. Pat Cummins had elected to bowl after Sunrisers Hyderabad won the toss.
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) had placed dead last on the 2023 IPL Points Table. Kolkata Knight Riders have fared only marginally better, finishing seventh out of 10 teams in 2023. Both teams were looking to add a mark in the win column of the IPL 2024 Points Table from their first league match of the 2024 season, on March 23. In the end, the win went to KKR.
The match was at Eden Gardens, where Kolkata Knight Riders have won over 66 percent of their IPL matches against SRH. Going forwards, SRH will look to improve on their history under new captain Pat Cummins.
Saturday's match was scheduled to begin at 7.30 pm, but started a little later - perhaps because weekends are double-headers during IPL season, and the first match between Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings ran over.
The bouncy pitch in Kolkata was great for big hitters.
Often a key highlight of KKR matches is seeing team owner Shah Rukh Khan encouraging the men in purple and gold to Korbo, Lorbo, Jeetbo Re. Khan was at Eden Gardens on March 23 - his hair combed back into a half ponytail. Indeed, after the match, Kolkata cheered so hard for him that presenter Harsha Bhogle joked he could barely hear the players in the post-match interviews.
