Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 Points Table team No. 2 taking on the team that's ranked seventh might suggest a battle of the unequals, but there is no such thing in the IPL. Kolkata Knight Riders boast an all-win record after two IPL 2024 matches and are one of only three teams to win away from home, but their trip to Visakhapatnam to take on Rishabh Pant’s Delhi Capitals on Wednesday won’t necessarily be a walk in the park.

Back in action after 14 months on the sidelines recuperating from the injuries sustained following his horrendous road accident in December 2022, Rishabh Pant announced his readiness for the battles ahead, including the T20 World Cup later in the summer, with a blistering half-century against Chennai Super Kings over the weekend. The stumper will again be under the spotlight against a versatile KKR attack that had the measure of a strong Royal Challengers Bengaluru batting unit on Saturday as he eyes more individual and collective success for obvious reasons.

The explosive firepower in the DC batting is matched by former two-time champions KKR, who will be delighted that all their top-order batsmen have notched up meaningful runs this early in the campaign. Their captain, Shreyas Iyer, has fallen off the radar in the race for a slot in the national T20 set-up and while that will be his primary individual focus, he is tasked with the greater responsibility of masterminding his franchise’s fortunes too.

Sunil Narine and Andre Russell, the Calypso Kings, have been their star performers to date, the latter with the bat in game one and the ball in the second match. KKR have been bolstered by the return of mercurial former India opener Gautam Gambhir to their dugout as mentor, but DC have the wisdom of Ricky Ponting to fall back on. Ponting and Pant have struck up an alliance for the ages, the nous and strategic excellence of the former lapped up with glee by the latter who is blessed with natural street-smarts.
