A two-match Test series between India and South Africa will begin on Friday at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. When the Proteas last visited India for a Test series in 2019, the host team defeated them 3-0.

South Africa are yet to win a Test match in India since 2010 and the World Test Champions will hope to break the jinx this time. After all the Black Caps destroyed the Indian team's long-held sense of invincibility in home Tests by completing a clean sweep in a three-match series last year.

However, India seemed to have moved past that humiliating loss, which was followed by another thrashing by Australia Down Under. Under new Test captain Shubman Gill the team put on a strong performance in a series that ended in a draw in England before blanking the West Indies 2-0 at home.

South Africa's spinners will need to improve in Indian conditions after the Test series in Pakistan ended in 1-1 draw last month. Temba Bavuma, the captain, will also need his batters to compete with the seasoned Indian tweakers.
