The much-anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy begins on November 22 as India and Australia prepare to lock horns in a highly charged five-match Test series. With both teams boasting a wealth of cricketing talent, this rivalry has become one of the most intense and exciting in world cricket, especially following India’s remarkable victories on Australian soil in 2020-21 and 2023-24. The clash holds added significance for India, as they need to win at least four Tests in the series to secure direct qualification for the ICC World Test Championship final, scheduled to be held at Lord’s in June.
Millions of fans worldwide will tune in to watch cricket's biggest stars, including Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Mitchell Starc, Jasprit Bumrah, Pat Cummins and Steve Smith battle it out in during the Test series.
The Aussies have failed to defeat India in the past two series, most recently losing 2-1 in 2020-21. Australia is coming off a successful World Test Championship final victory over India in June and will be looking to carry that momentum into the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
However, India's preparation for the series has been hit by a few setbacks. Captain Rohit Sharma will miss the first Test due to personal reasons, as he is spending time with his wife after the birth of their second child. In his absence, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah will lead the side.
Additionally, India will be without star batter Shubman Gill, who has been ruled out of the opening Test due to a finger injury. In response to the absence of key players, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) called up young Devdutt Padikkal as a replacement. Padikkal, who had been touring with the India A squad, will now join the Jasprit Bumrah led 18-member squad for the first Test match at the Opus Stadium in Perth.
