Mohammed Siraj and Travis Head have been punished for their on-field spat during the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Adelaide, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Monday (December 9). India's fast bowler has been fined 20 percent of his match fees while Head escaped a fine but was sanctioned for his verbal exchange with the India pacer. Both cricketers have been handed one demerit point for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct.
"Siraj has been penalised 20% of his match fee after being found guilty of breaching article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel which relates to “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon dismissal," the ICC said in a statement.
"Head too was sanctioned for breaching Article 2.13 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to the 'abuse of a player, player support personnel, umpire or match referee during an international match'." it added.
During the second day of the pink-ball Test in Adelaide, a heated verbal exchange between Mohammed Siraj and Travis Head drew significant attention. However, the Australian batter has since clarified that the two have resolved the misunderstanding.
The incident began during the first innings when Siraj dismissed Head, who had scored an impressive 140 runs, with an inswinging yorker. After claiming the wicket, Siraj made a gesture signaling Head to walk back, which led to a spirited verbal exchange between the players. The moment quickly went viral as video footage circulated on social media.
Speaking to ABC News, Head explained that the exchange stemmed from a misunderstanding, which was later cleared up. A separate video from the third day of the match shows Siraj, while batting in the second innings, engaged in a calm and friendly conversation with Head, who was fielding nearby, indicating that the two had moved past the incident.
