A day after India's historic win in the T20 World Cup, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a reward of Rs 125 crore for Team India for winning the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah took to microblogging site X to make this announcement.
"I am pleased to announce prize money of INR 125 Crores for Team India for winning the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. The team has showcased exceptional talent, determination, and sportsmanship throughout the tournament. Congratulations to all the players, coaches, and support staff for this outstanding achievement!", wrote the BCCI Secretary.
On June 29, Shah hailed India’s epochal title win, saying they have “silenced their critics” with an exceptional performance.India defeated South Africa by seven runs in a tense final at Bridgetown, Barbados, to claim their second world title in the T20 format.
“Under the exceptional leadership of Rohit Sharma, this team has shown remarkable resolve and resilience, becoming the first team in the history of the ICC T20 World Cup to win the tournament unbeaten,” said Shah in a statement.
Shah termed India’s title run as “inspirational.” “They have faced and silenced their critics with stellar performances time and again. Their journey has been nothing short of inspirational, and today, they join the ranks of the greats,” he added.
He also lauded the team’s strong work ethic.
“This team has made us all proud with their dedication, hard work, and unyielding spirit. Led by Rohit Sharma, and ably assisted by Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, and others, they have fulfilled the dreams and aspirations of 1.4 billion Indians,” he said.
On June 30, Indian cricket savoured a World Cup victory while also coming to terms with the T20 retirements of modern-day greats Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
Both Rohit and Kohli called time on their T20 careers for India after the cricketing powerhouse edged South Africa to clinch its second T20 World Cup title in Barbados on June 29.
The two batting stalwarts, who have carried the dreams of a cricket-crazy nation for over 15 years, ended their T20 careers at their peak. Kohli's match-winning 76 earned him the Player of the Final award, while Rohit led the team from the front with three half-centuries in the tournament, during which India remained unbeaten.
The title clash with South Africa was also the last match for outgoing coach Rahul Dravid, a former captain who left the international stage as a player without a World Cup win.
Former India batsman Gautam Gambhir is widely reported to succeed Dravid as coach of the high-profile Indian team. Gambhir, who was a key part of India's 2011 ODI World Cup win at home, coached the IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders to their third title this year.
