The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir as the new head coach. He takes over from Rahul Dravid, whose three-year tenure as head coach of the Indian men's team concluded with India's successful campaign in the T20 World Cup in June.
Dravid assumed leadership of the Indian cricket team from Ravi Shastri in 2021. Originally set to conclude after the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, Dravid's term was extended until the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the United States and West Indies.
BCCI secretary Jay Shah announced Gambhir's appointment on the social media platform X. Gambhir is expected to serve as India's head coach until the ODI World Cup in South Africa in 2027, although an official announcement on the duration of his tenure is awaited.
Gambhir's initial assignment as India coach will be the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka, scheduled to commence on July 27. The exact itinerary for the bilateral series has not yet been released.
Interestingly, Gambhir, who served as a mentor for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in 2022 and 2023, has no prior coaching experience at any level—be it in domestic cricket, with an Indian Premier League (IPL) team, or a national squad. In 2024, at the request of co-owner Shah Rukh Khan, the 42-year-old returned as mentor to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), with whom he had previously won two IPL trophies. Upon his return, KKR triumphed in IPL 2024, showcasing aggressive cricket.
Despite his lack of a coaching role, Gambhir has consistently been a focal point with his assertive approach from the sidelines of the game.
