England batting legend Geoffrey Boycott has been readmitted to hospital after experiencing a setback in his recovery from recent throat surgery.
The 83-year-old Geoffrey Boycott's family revealed that his health has taken a downturn since his discharge on Friday following a successful procedure to remove a cancerous tumour. Boycott's condition has worsened with the onset of pneumonia, a serious lung infection that poses significant challenges, especially for elderly patients.
His return to hospital highlights the seriousness of his condition and underscores the necessity for intensive medical care at this critical juncture.
"Thank you all for the well wishes, we've been blown away by the sheer number of them," read a statement from the family on Boycott's X account.
"Unfortunately, things have taken a turn for the worse and my father has developed pneumonia and is unable to eat or drink so is back in hospital on oxygen and a feeding tube for the foreseeable."
Boycott, who is battling throat cancer for the second time, previously faced the disease in 2002, undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
Geoffrey Boycott's cricketing career is illustrious, marked by achievements such as scoring 100 first-class hundreds, accumulating over 8,000 runs in 108 Tests for England with an impressive average of nearly 48. In 1978, he also captained England in four Tests when Mike Brearley was injured.
After retiring from a 24-year first-class career in 1986, Boycott transitioned successfully into journalism and broadcasting. His insightful commentary and analysis earned him a dedicated following worldwide, particularly in the Indian subcontinent.
In 2020, Boycott retired from his role as a commentator on BBC Radio's Test Match Special after a 14-year tenure. His decision was influenced by his quadruple heart bypass surgery in 2018 and the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
