India's effort on the field against Australia in Sydney on Saturday demonstrated how determined they were to win the final ODI and avoid a series whitewash. And the team achieved the same by beating the hosts by nine wickets, courtesy to unbeaten knocks from Rohit Sharma (121) and Virat Kohli (74).
The proceedings began with Australia winning the toss and opting to bat. Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh gave hosts an ideal start but India gained momentum in the middle and the closing stage of the innings.
Matt Renshaw and Alex Carey formed a partnership that had the potential to cost India the match when the first two wickets were removed. Carey was holding one end to lead Australia to a big total even after Matthew Short was dismissed.
But in the 34th over of the innings, Shreyas Iyer produced a remarkable effort to remove Carey and keep things under control. Harshit Rana bowled a back-of-length delivery along the off-stump line, which Carey attempted to pull but failed to make proper connection. The ball took a top edge and ballooned towards the backward point area.
Positioned inside the 30-yard circle, Iyer chased after it and dived to complete an incredible catch. While his effort gave India the wicket, the Indian vice-captain ended up hurting himself. With a distressed expression, he left the field to receive medical attention and didn't come out for rest of the innings.
BCCI later shared an update on Iyer's injury.
The board confirmed Iyer sustained an injury to his left rib cage and was taken to hospital for further evaluation and assessment of his injury.
With Rohit and Kohli remaining unbeaten, Iyer wasn’t required to bat.
