During the third ODI in Sydney, Shreyas Iyer took a stunning catch to dismiss Alex Carey at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), but he suffered a severe blow to his left rib cage and in result, he was bleeding internally. Quick help from the BCCI medical team on the ground saved his life, according to the media reports. After the injury on the field, Iyer was helped to the dressing room from where he was taken to the hospital for scans. The BCCI statement on Monday made it clear that the Indian middle-order batter had a "laceration injury to the spleen."
After the on-field injury, Iyer was assisted back to the dressing room before being rushed to the hospital for scans. A BCCI statement released on Monday confirmed that the Indian middle-order batter had suffered a “laceration injury to the spleen.”
"Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region...He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well," the statement read.
"The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress."
A report by Dainik Jagran on Sunday revealed that Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala (head of the ICC Medical Committee, BCCI Medical Panel, and the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Centre for Sports Medicine) was sent Iyer’s medical scans from Sydney. Dr. Pardiwala, who has previously handled the recoveries of Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah, reviewed the reports and emailed a four-point update to the BCCI. In his final point, he commended the medical staff for their life-saving intervention.
The fourth point read: "Last but not least, congratulations to the medical team on the ground. Your timely diagnosis and immediate action saved a life."
On Monday, a PTI report informed that after return from the field, Iyer was down on the floor and fainted, and at that time his vital signs were deteriorating rapidly. The BCCI medical staff who were on deck took the situation in hand without delay, got him stable and then arranged for his way to the hospital.
"The team doctor and physio didn't take any chances and took him to the hospital immediately. Things are stable now, but it could have been fatal. He's a tough lad and should be fine soon," a source told PTI on condition of anonymity.
Cricbuzz revealed later on Monday that Iyer had been taken out of the ICU and that he was no longer in danger. Currently, local friends in Sydney are taking care of him, and a relative from Mumbai is coming shortly after the completion of his visa formalities which got slightly delayed over the weekend.
