During​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌ the third ODI in Sydney, Shreyas Iyer took a stunning catch to dismiss Alex Carey at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), but he suffered a severe blow to his left rib cage and in result, he was bleeding internally. Quick help from the BCCI medical team on the ground saved his life, according to the media reports. After the injury on the field, Iyer was helped to the dressing room from where he was taken to the hospital for scans. The BCCI statement on Monday made it clear that the Indian middle-order batter had a "laceration injury to the spleen."

"Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region...He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well," the statement read.

"The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress."
