In the savanna of Africa, power determines survival. Few lions grasped that better than the Mapogo coalition, six males that once held sway over South Africa's Sabi Sands Reserve. Their reign, marked by terror, power and tactics, is one of the greatest stories in wildlife history.

How did Mapogo lions come to dominate?

From online sites and media outlets, the saga started when six young men were driven out of the Sparta Pride, otherwise referred to as the Eyrefield Pride. Rather than go their separate ways, they bonded and formed a coalition that would transform the reserve for good. Life was cruel at the beginning, with scavenging and food battles shaping their existence. But solidarity provided their strength, and by 2006 they were no longer intruders but masters of their domain.

The break came when they assaulted the Ottawa Pride, which was a dominant and well-established pride. Information indicates that the Mapogo males killed an Ottawa male and afterwards killed the pride's cubs to cement ownership. With nothing left to contest, they took approximately 170,000 acres of land and formed an empire that few were brave enough to challenge.
