The ocean has once again delivered a moment of wonder. NOAA scientists have released rare footage showing a humpback whale breaching from her own point of view.

How did scientists capture the whale’s perspective?
Researchers from Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary placed a suction-cup tag on a whale named Spell. The non-invasive device collects data and occasionally records video. The tag detached naturally after Spell launched herself from the water.

The clip shows the whale gathering speed with her tail. She then surged to the surface and leapt joyfully into the air. As she splashed down, the small camera popped free from her body.

Why do humpback whales breach so dramatically?
Researchers continue to argue over the actual function of breaching. Some say it assists whales in communication over great distances. Others propose that it could be used to remove parasites. It could also be merely a demonstration of playfulness and strength.
