The bear approached a summer house, alarming the resident. An elderly woman was inside, frightened by the animal rummaging through her garbage. She contacted her daughter in Reykjavik for help.

Rare Sightings and Their Implications

Polar bears are not native to Iceland. They occasionally drift from Greenland on ice floes. Anna Sveinsdóttir from the Icelandic Institute of Natural History noted recent iceberg sightings.

This bear was the first seen in Iceland since 2016. Historically, only 600 sightings have been recorded since the ninth century. While polar bears are protected, they can be killed if they pose a danger to humans.

Aftermath and Research

The bear weighed between 150 and 200 kilograms. Scientists plan to examine its remains for health assessments. They will check for parasites and evaluate organ health.

The bear’s pelt and skull may be preserved for research. A Coast Guard helicopter searched the area for other bears but found none.

After the incident, the frightened resident chose to extend her stay in the village. Authorities remain vigilant in protecting both residents and wildlife.
