Safari-goers in Karnataka’s Bhadra Tiger Reserve have a rare treat awaiting them. A black panther cub has been spotted in the Lakkavalli range, adding excitement for visitors and wildlife enthusiasts.

Where was the cub first seen?
Wildlife photographer Arvind Ramamurthy first sighted the cub in June. He noticed three leopard cubs, one of which was melanistic. “It was a big surprise for me and my friends. The cubs are normally shy but came out with their mother,” he said. Ramamurthy, who had earlier photographed a black panther in Kabini, recorded the sighting with photos and videos.

How often has the cub appeared?
Forest officials confirmed the cub has been sighted for two months. Pulkit Meena, Deputy Conservator of Forests, said staff had been noticing the animal regularly. The officers also stated that the reserve already has an adult black panther. The cub, therefore, marks a new addition to the population.

What measures are being taken by the forest staff?
Santhosh Surimatt, Range Forest Officer of Lakkavalli, said the team is ensuring the panther’s family remains undisturbed. He noted that an adult black panther had been seen in the reserve earlier, but the cub signals the continuation of its presence.
