An ancient comet, C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, has captivated stargazers in India. Discovered in 2023, this comet is making its first documented appearance in 80,000 years. It recently made its closest approach to Earth, delighting observers in early October 2024.
The celestial event began in the first week of October. Stargazers were able to view the comet low in the western sky after sunset. Astronomical experts noted that if illuminated properly, the comet's tail could be visible to the naked eye. The best observation period is from October 14 to 24, ideally using binoculars or a small telescope.
How to See the Comet
Starting Saturday, October 12, the comet appears low on the western horizon. It will be visible about 45 minutes after sunset each evening until the month’s end. While special equipment isn't necessary, binoculars provide the best viewing experience.
This comet won’t return for another 80,000 years, according to NASA. Don’t miss the chance to witness this rare event!
Stargazer Experiences
Indian stargazers have shared stunning images of the comet. In Hanle, Ladakh, an astrophotography masterclass team ventured to Gongma La at 4,880 metres above sea level. Despite less-than-ideal conditions, they managed to capture the comet with the naked eye.
