New horned ‘Lucifer Bee’ discovered in wildlands of Australia

Scientists have found a tiny native bee in Western Australia. The species features unusual horn‑like protrusions above the head. It is nicknamed the “Lucifer bee” because of its appearance. This discovery shows how much remains to be found in nature.

A Curious Find in the Goldfields

The insect was discovered during a survey of a rare wildflower in the Bremer Ranges. Lead researcher Kit Prendergast said, “The female had these incredible little horns on her face.”

The bee was found while studying the endangered plant Marianthus aquilonaris. The region is under‑surveyed and faces threats from mining and habitat change.
