Astronomers have captured a stunning new view of one of the Milky Way’s closest galactic neighbours, the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). Located approximately 210,000 light-years away, the SMC is a small galaxy that orbits our home galaxy. Nestled within this distant neighbour is NGC 346, a spectacular star cluster that has recently been scrutinised by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope.

The latest images from Hubble, showcasing NGC 346 in ultraviolet light alongside visible-light data, offer a remarkable view of this star cluster. NGC 346 is brimming with hot, blue, high-mass stars, and it’s believed to house more than half of all known high-mass stars within the SMC. These intense stars radiate immense energy, which carves out and shapes the surrounding gas and dust in the nebula known as N66.
