NASA has released a rare image of Mount Everest. The photo, taken from space, captures the peak and its glaciers.
NASA shared an image of Mount Everest taken in 1996. The photo was captured from the space shuttle Columbia during the STS-80 mission. The mountain, which stands at 8,848 metres, appears near a V-shaped valley. Several glaciers can also be seen around the peak.
Mission STS-80 and Its Achievements
The image was taken on 30 November 1996 by Columbia’s crew. STS-80 was the last shuttle mission of that year. The mission successfully launched and retrieved two research spacecraft. The image offers a unique perspective of the world’s tallest mountain from space.
