In a historic leap for private space exploration, SpaceX’s Jared Isaacman safely returned to Earth on Sunday at 3:37 am ET. His five-day Polaris Dawn mission included the world’s first commercial spacewalk, pushing new boundaries in private space travel. This journey also marked the farthest human venture into space since NASA’s Apollo programme ended in 1972. “SpaceX, back at home we all have a lot of work to do, but from here, Earth sure looks like a perfect world,” Isaacman stated.
From Entrepreneur to Space Pioneer
Unlike famed astronauts Neil Armstrong and Jack Swigert, Isaacman’s spacewalk may not feature iconic phrases. However, he is now a trailblazer in space exploration. His mission differs from previous ones, but he joins the ranks of pioneering space travellers.
Isaacman’s space journey started as a high-school dropout. At 16, in 1999, he founded United Bank Card, now Shift4 Payments. As CEO, he turned the company into a financial technology leader processing over $260 billion annually. His success has made him a billionaire, with a net worth exceeding $2 billion.
In 2021, Isaacman funded and participated in SpaceX’s Inspiration4 mission. This flight marked his first commercial spaceflight, where he orbited Earth for three days. The mission also had a charitable aspect, raising over $250 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
A New Milestone in Space Travel
Now, Isaacman has achieved another milestone by participating in the first commercial spacewalk during the Polaris Dawn mission. He ventured to 1,400km above Earth and performed an extravehicular activity (EVA) from a SpaceX capsule. Unlike astronauts with military or scientific backgrounds, Isaacman’s journey into space began with his entrepreneurial ventures.
Isaacman’s passion for aviation extends beyond his space missions. He is qualified to fly various aircraft, including military jets, and holds world records. He also founded Drake International, leasing former military jets.
Despite his space and aviation achievements, Isaacman remains rooted in New Jersey, where he grew up. He lives with his wife Monica and their two daughters. Monica, sharing his love for flying and adventurous pursuits, has yet to join him on a space mission.
