Yogini Ekadashi is a spiritually significant day in Hinduism, especially for devotees of Lord Vishnu. Falling on the Ekadashi tithi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Ashadha, this year the fast will be observed on 21st June 2025. It is believed that observing the Yogini Ekadashi Vrat not only helps eliminate sins and past karmas but also cures chronic diseases and opens the path to moksha (liberation).
Yogini Ekadashi Vrat Significance
The Yogini Ekadashi fast is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the protector and preserver of the universe. This vrat is said to be one of the most fruitful among the 24 Ekadashis in the Hindu calendar. Devotees believe that by fasting on this sacred day with full devotion and discipline, they can free themselves from the cycle of birth and death and attain peace in both body and soul.
Story Behind Yogini Ekadashi
As per ancient texts, a Yaksha named Hemamali served in the court of King Kubera, a staunch devotee of Lord Shiva. Hemamali was responsible for bringing flowers from Lake Manasarovar for the king’s daily Shiva puja.
One day, distracted by the beauty of his wife Vishalakshi, Hemamali delayed his duty and failed to deliver the flowers on time. This infuriated King Kubera, who cursed him with leprosy and banishment from the celestial world.
Cursed and afflicted with a painful disease, Hemamali wandered alone in a forest. There, he encountered the wise sage Markandeya and narrated his story of suffering and remorse. The sage advised him to observe the Yogini Ekadashi vrat, explaining its transformative power to cleanse sins and grant divine forgiveness.
Following sage Markandeya’s advice, Hemamali observed the fast with complete dedication. Pleased by his penance, Lord Vishnu not only cured him of leprosy but also restored his place in heaven. This tale reinforces the belief that Yogini Ekadashi is a karmic purifier, capable of healing physical illnesses and erasing the darkest of sins.
