In ancient times, a rich merchant lived with his wife in a large town. Despite having all comforts, they were deeply unhappy because they had no children. Hoping for a divine miracle, the merchant began observing the Sawan Somwar fast with full devotion. Every Monday, he offered oil lamps at Lord Shiva’s temple and prayed sincerely.

Goddess Parvati, moved by the merchant’s dedication, asked Lord Shiva why his prayers hadn’t been answered. Shiva explained that the merchant’s past karmas did not allow him to have a child. However, upon Parvati’s request and the devotee’s faith, Lord Shiva appeared in the merchant’s dream. He blessed him with a son but warned—the child would live only for 14 years.

Soon, the merchant’s son Amar was born. As Amar grew older, his father sent him to Kashi (Varanasi) for education. During the journey, Amar stayed in a town where a royal wedding was taking place. The groom had gone missing, so Amar was asked to take his place temporarily. Later, when the real groom arrived, the bride refused to marry anyone other than Amar, whom she had already accepted as her husband.
