On this day, devotees undertake a strict fast, refraining from consuming both food and water, making it the most challenging of all Ekadashi fasts. Nirjala Ekadashi falls just after Ganga Dussehra but in some years Ganga Dussehra and Nirjala Ekadashi might fall on the same day.

Nirjala Ekadashi, also known as Pandava Ekadashi or Bhimseni Ekadashi, is associated with a legend involving Bhimsen, the second Pandava brother. Bhimsen, known for his appetite, could not resist food and failed to observe the Ekadashi fast. Unlike Bhima, the other Pandavas and Draupadi faithfully observed the fast. Distressed by his lack of resolve and disrespect towards Lord Vishnu, Bhima sought guidance from Maharishi Vyasa. Vyasa suggested that Bhima observe a single Nirjala Ekadasi fast to make up for not fasting on all Ekadashis throughout the year. This story is the reason behind the alternative names for Nirjala Ekadashi.
