Chaitra Amavasya holds special religious significance. According to beliefs, the Amavasya (new moon) that falls in the month of Chaitra is known as Chaitra Amavasya or Darsha Amavasya. Taking a holy dip in sacred rivers on this day is considered highly auspicious. People also perform Snan (bathing) and Daan (charity) to get rid of Pitru Dosha (ancestral affliction). Worshipping ancestors on this Amavasya is believed to bring their blessings.

When is Chaitra Amavasya in 2025?
As per the Hindu Panchang (calendar), the Amavasya Tithi of Krishna Paksha in Chaitra month will begin on the evening of March 28 at 7:55 PM and will end on March 29 at 4:27 PM. Based on this, Chaitra Amavasya will be observed on Saturday, March 29. Since it falls on a Saturday, it is also known as Shanichari Amavasya.
Significance of Shanichari Amavasya
On this special Amavasya, devotees also worship Lord Shani (Saturn). It is believed that praying to Lord Shani on this day helps reduce the effects of Shani Sade Sati and Shani Dhaiyya, which are considered challenging astrological periods.
Auspicious Timings for Snan and Daan on Chaitra Amavasya
On March 29 (Saturday), the best time for bathing and making charitable offerings will be from 4:42 AM to 5:29 AM. Another auspicious period, Abhijit Muhurat, will be from 12:19 PM to 1:08 PM. Besides these specific timings, taking a holy dip before sunset is also considered beneficial. Along with bathing, performing Pitru Tarpan (offering water to ancestors) is recommended.
Offerings to Lord Shani on Shanichari Amavasya
Since this Amavasya falls on a Saturday, devotees can also perform rituals dedicated to Lord Shani. To seek relief from the negative effects of Shani Sade Sati and Shani Dhaiyya, devotees can light an oil lamp with mustard oil at a Shani temple in the evening. Additionally, offering black sesame seeds (til) and black gram (urad dal) in charity is considered highly beneficial.
