In a past epoch, another form of the Goddess, Mahakali, wanted to recover white skin and to vanish from the world for meditation. When she was lost, the lord Shiva got angry and uneasy and questioned Devarishi Narada where she could be.
Narada explained to Lord Shiva that the form of Mahakali could be seen in the northern corner of Mount Sumeru. Due to Mahadeva’s directions, Narada went to the northern side of Sumeru and met the Goddess. When Narada went to propose marriage on behalf of the girl to Mahadeva, she got annoyed and then produced the Bhairavi from herself.
Finally Mata Tripura Bhairavi took the form of the shadow of Mahakali. Thus the text known as the Rudrayamal Tantra Shastra speaks of all the ten Mahavidyas as relative to the divine energy of Lord Shiva. The Devi Bhagavatam gives a description of Tripura Bhairavi as the calm and aloof form of Mahakali.
