The sacred Nilachal Hills in Guwahati, Assam, came alive with spiritual fervour as thousands of devotees gathered for Ambubachi Mela 2025, one of the most revered Hindu festivals in the region. The four-day event began on June 22 at the historic Kamakhya Temple, a prominent Shakti Peetha and a centre of tantric worship.

The Ambubachi Mela marks the annual menstruation cycle of Goddess Kamakhya, symbolising the power of creation and fertility. As per tradition, the temple remains closed during these four days, signifying the goddess’s period of rest. This year, the doors were closed on Sunday, June 22, and will reopen on June 26 after the completion of the Ambubachi Prabritti rituals.

Devotees believe that during this time, the Earth’s creative power is at its peak. The Kamakhya Temple, located just 7 km from Guwahati city, stands as a powerful symbol of Shakti (divine feminine energy) and is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas in India. Each year, lakhs of devotees, spiritual gurus, tantriks, and sadhus from across India and abroad travel to Ambubachi Mela seeking spiritual upliftment and divine blessings. The Assam state government and temple management have made elaborate arrangements to accommodate the influx of pilgrims during this sacred event.

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma extended his wishes via social media, stating, “Today marks the beginning of the #Ambubachi Mahayog, an annual celebration of Maa Kamakhya's divine femininity. I welcome all pilgrims to Assam and wish everyone a divine experience.”
