Donald Trump on Wednesday won the US presidential election, cruising past his Democratic rival Kamala Harris in a tough battle. The 78-year-old Republican leader crossed the 270-majority mark needed to clinch the presidency by securing a victory in the key swing state of Wisconsin.
According to races called by the Associated Press (AP), 277 electoral votes went to Republican candidate Trump and 224 to Democratic Party's Harris.
Trump, who refused to accept defeat four years ago, will now be the 47th president of the United States. By returning to the White House, he has set a number of records. Here's a look at some of his firsts:
1. At 78, Donald Trump is now the oldest person in the history of United States to be elected president. Joe Biden, 82, is currently the oldest sitting US President.
2. By winning the White House race, he has become only the second president in US history to serve non-consecutive terms. Earlier, Grover Cleveland held two non-consecutive terms in the White House - (1885 to 1889) and (1893 to 1897). Trump served his first term as US president from 2016 to 2020 defeating Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.
3. He will now be the first convicted individual to become US President and sit in the Oval Office. Trump is scheduled to appear in a New York courtroom on November 26 to receive a sentence for his conviction on 34 counts of falsifying business records to cover up a hush money payment of $130,000 made to adult-film star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 campaign.
4. He becomes the only president in Unites States' history to face impeachment proceedings twice. In 2019, the Republican leader was impeached over allegations that he secretly sought help from Ukraine to boost his chances of re-election. It was alleged that Trump urged Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to probe one of the frontrunners who would contest against him in the 2020 presidential election. It was reported that he had frozen $400 million in military aid to Ukraine.
Donald Trump was impeached for a second time in 2021 following the January 6 Capitol attack, making him the first US president in history to be impeached twice.
5. He is also likely to become the first Republican to win the popular vote in two decades, as per the New York Times. "Thank you very much. Winning the popular vote was very nice, very nice, I will tell you," Trump said earlier today.
