UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the "broadening conflict in the Middle East" on Tuesday, after Iran launched a wave of missiles at Israel.
"I condemn the broadening of the Middle East conflict with escalation after escalation," Guterres wrote on X.
"This must stop. We absolutely need a ceasefire," Guterres said in a statement on Tuesday.
Guterres "appeals for an immediate ceasefire," spokesman Stephane Dujarric said, adding that "an all-out war must be avoided in Lebanon at all costs, and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Lebanon must be respected."
His remarks came after Iran fired hundreds of ballistic missiles fired towards Israel, raising tensions between the two arch-rivals in the area.
Israel has voiced strong criticism of the UN’s response on X saying, "We condemn your inability to string together a tweet which holds Iran responsible for firing 181 ballistic missiles at 10 million Israeli civilians."
Tensions have been running high between Tehran and Tel Aviv since the assassination of Haniyeh in the Iranian capital on August 1. Iran placed the blame on Israel, with a pledge of harsh retaliation.
The highest leadership of Iran condemned the killing of Nasrallah, a significant ally of Iran, in an Israeli airstrike on a southern Beirut suburb.
It is not yet known if the missiles fired toward Israel struck their targets and if there were any casualties or damages.
