Senate lawmakers are set to question the acting director of the Secret Service about law enforcement lapses preceding the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump on Tuesday. This congressional hearing is the latest in a series addressing the shooting.

Ronald Rowe became the acting director last week following the resignation of his predecessor, Kimberly Cheatle. Cheatle stepped down after a House hearing where she faced bipartisan criticism and could not answer specific questions about the communication failures leading up to the July 13 incident.

Rowe will be accompanied by FBI Deputy Director Paul Abbate at a joint hearing of the Senate Judiciary and Homeland Security committees.

The hearing comes one day after the FBI released new details about its investigation into the shooting, revealing that the gunman, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, had looked online for information about mass shootings, power plants, improvised explosive devices and the May assassination attempt of the Slovakian prime minister.
