A new documentary about Melania Trump, the incoming first lady, is currently in production under the direction of Brett Ratner and will be distributed by Amazon Prime Video. The streaming giant has secured exclusive rights for both the streaming and theatrical release, with the film set to debut later this year.
Filming for the documentary is already underway. Amazon has promised an "unprecedented behind-the-scenes look" at Melania Trump, offering viewers a "truly unique story." This project follows the release of Melania's memoir late last year and comes just as her husband, Donald Trump, prepares for his second term in office starting on January 20.
The documentary adds to the growing connection between Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Donald Trump. In December, Amazon announced a $1 million donation to the President-elect's inauguration fund, as well as plans to stream the inauguration on Prime Video, another in-kind donation worth an additional $1 million.
While Trump and Bezos had a contentious relationship in the past, especially with Trump’s critiques of Amazon and The Washington Post (which Bezos owns), their interactions have become more amicable recently. Bezos expressed optimism about potential regulatory changes under Trump’s second term, reflecting a shift in tone between the two.
This documentary also marks Brett Ratner’s first project since multiple women, including actress Olivia Munn, accused him of sexual misconduct in 2017 during the #MeToo movement. Ratner, known for directing the "Rush Hour" series, "Red Dragon," and "X-Men: The Last Stand," has denied the allegations through his legal representatives. Argentine filmmaker Fernando Sulichin is serving as the executive producer of the film, which began shooting in December.
Melania Trump, who has largely maintained a private life since her husband’s 2016 presidential campaign, is expected to take on a more prominent public role as first lady during Trump’s second term. While she has largely stayed out of the campaign spotlight, her involvement is likely to increase once her husband is inaugurated again, especially considering the demands of her new role.
