A group of unconventional bodyguards, dubbed the “White Mafia,” is gaining traction in China for stepping up to fill legal gaps that often leave victims of abuse and intimidation helpless. These individuals, who call themselves the “Professional Bodyguard Team,” are tough-looking enforcers and protectors offering tailored solutions to their clients’ deeply personal problems.

The team, which boasts 160,000 followers on social media site Douyin, has become a viral sensation. Known for their intimidating black attire and fierce demeanor, they are described by netizens as “mafia-like” figures who they wouldn’t dare cross. Yet, their mission is far from criminal. “We see ourselves as female guardians of justice,” explained Lei, a member of the team, in an interview with Vista Hydrogen Business.

Initially formed in 2018 to provide security for celebrities and public figures, the team expanded their services in 2022 when they noticed a surge in requests for assistance with personal crises. “Due to gaps in the law, some problems could not be resolved through traditional means, so we began helping vulnerable groups in our own ways,” Lei said.

The team comprises retired military officers, business owners, and even female boxers, offering a unique mix of skills. Around 70% of their clients are women aged 25 to 35, who reach out to them via Douyin. Their cases range from handling abusive ex-partners to recovering unpaid deposits from landlords.
