Delhi battles traffic congestion as heavy rain leaves large parts of city waterlogged

Heavy rain caused severe waterlogging and traffic congestion across large parts of Delhi creating difficulties for commuters in the morning on August 29. Visuals from the Mehrauli-Badarpur Road showed vehicles struggling to wade through the water.

It's been the wettest August for Delhiites with highest number of rainy days in the last 14 years, according to weather officials. The city recorded 23 rainy days so far this month, surpassing the previous record of 22 days set in 2012 and 20 days in 2011. A "rainy day" is defined as a day when the city receives more than 2.4 mm of rainfall.

The heavy downpour on Thursday continued the trend of unseasonal rains, which already impacted the National Capital Region (NCR) on Wednesday, bringing with it thunderstorms and lightning. As a result, many areas saw slowed traffic, with vehicles struggling to ply on waterlogged roads.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also issued warnings for continued bad weather in the region, urging citizens to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel if possible. Authorities are working to clear the waterlogged areas to ease the traffic situation.
