Kristen Fischer, an American content creator and mother of three, who has been living in Delhi for the past four years, has shared her reasons for choosing to raise her children in India instead of the United States. Fischer, who works at SkyFish Development, outlined eight compelling factors that she believes make India a better place for her children to grow up.
In an Instagram post, Fischer stated: "Here are just a few of the ways they will be better off spending their childhood here instead of the USA."
She highlighted aspects such as cultural awareness, adaptability, multilingualism, resilience, and independence as key advantages of growing up in India.
Fischer detailed the following reasons why she believes her children will thrive in India:
Cultural awareness and adaptability
Fischer emphasised that living in India exposes children to a rich diversity of cultures, languages, and customs, helping them develop a deep understanding and appreciation for different traditions. This, she stated, encourages open-mindedness and adaptability.
Multilingualism
India’s linguistic diversity means her children will learn Hindi alongside English and be exposed to many other languages. She noted that being multilingual enhances cognitive development, improves communication skills, and increases future job prospects.
Global perspective
Growing up in India, she said, would give her children a broader worldview. They would gain exposure to global issues, regional challenges, and different societal norms, helping them develop a more nuanced perspective on global citizenship.
Resilience and Independence
Fischer argued that navigating life in a different country teaches children to overcome challenges, from adapting to a new school system to understanding local customs. She noted that these experiences build resilience, problem-solving skills, and independence.
Emotional intelligence
Being exposed to diverse social norms and family structures in India, she stated, would help her children develop higher emotional intelligence. Learning to interact with people from different backgrounds would, she added, improve their empathy and social skills.
Strong family bonds
Fischer highlighted the importance of close-knit relationships in Indian families, contrasting it with the more individualistic culture in the US. She said that this emphasis on extended family networks provides her children with a deep sense of belonging and emotional support.
Appreciation for Simplicity and Gratitude
India’s stark socioeconomic contrasts, Fischer stated, teach children to value gratitude, simplicity, and appreciate what they have.
Connection to global networks
Fischer pointed out that growing up in a diverse country like India allows her children to build friendships with people from around the world, which she believes will serve as a valuable global network for their future careers.
Meanwhile, Fischer has been vocal about her love for India in the past. In 2023, she shared a video explaining why she left the US to live in India. Having first visited the country in 2017, she said she found more joy, community, and culture in India than in the United States.
She described the US as being "individualistic and socially isolated," whereas India felt "warm, welcoming, and full of life." She praised the strong sense of community in India, adding that it made her children feel more connected and supported.
While she acknowledged that financial opportunities might be more abundant in the US, she emphasised that true happiness comes from a sense of belonging, which she has found in India.
