Both USA and the European Union which account for two thirds of India's total apparel exports are practicing factory compliance. It has become a precondition before orders are placed by major buyers globally.
The Indian textile industry is meeting the compliance challenges very smoothly. Its initiative DISHA or Driving Industry Towards Sustainable Human Capital Advancement launched by AEPC has encouraged apparel exporters to follow better social practices. This has given them a competitive edge in the global market. With DISHA in progress India is well placed to emerge as one of the most compliant sourcing destinations amongst the developing nations, the results are visible. Huge orders that went to neighbouring countries have started coming India's way as it is meeting the stiff global compliance standards.
The government has also undertaken several favourable policy initiatives particularly in relation to women working and overtime in government factories as nearly 60 percent of women are employed by apparel manufacturers and the 12th plan has earmarked more funds towards common compliance code to impart capacity building and training to SME players. Besides there is an increasing adherence to CSR in the apparel industry which is transforming the industry. In some the proactive role by textile players has indeed put India on a strong wicket.
