Cyrus Mistry, the former chairperson of Tata Sons, died in a road accident in Maharashtra on September 4, causing an outpouring of shock and grief on social media. The accident took place near Palghar.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Mistry's death "shocking" and acknowledged him as a "promising business leader who believed in India’s economic prowess". "His passing away is a big loss to the world of commerce and industry. Condolences to his family and friends. May his soul rest in peace," the Prime Minister tweeted.
Condoling Cyrus Mistry's death, industrialist Gautam Adani said he was one of the finest gentlemen he had known. "He was one of the best business minds of his generation. It is a tragic loss. He was called away too soon. My thoughts and prayers are with his family," Adani tweeted.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also expressed shock at the sudden death of Mistry. "Extremely shocked by the news of the passing away of Cyrus Mistry. Recall our various interactions over the years. My deepest condolences to his family," he tweeted.
Union Minister Piyush Goyal said that he was "deeply anguished and shocked" by Cyrus Mistry's death.
"Indian industry has lost one of its shining stars whose contributions to India's economic progress will always be remembered," he tweeted. "My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends."
Tweeting his condolences, industrialist Anand Mahindra said he was convinced that Cyrus Mistry was destined for greatness.
"Hard to digest this news. I got to know Cyrus well during his all-too-brief tenure as the head of the House of Tata. I was convinced he was destined for greatness. If life had other plans for him, so be it, but life itself should not have been snatched away from him. Om Shanti" he tweeted.
Union minister Nitin Gadkari tweeted, "Deeply saddened to know about the unfortunate demise. Sincerest condolences to his family members."
RPG Group's chairperson Harsh Goenka remembered Cyrus Mistry as a "friend, a gentleman and a man of substance".

"He was instrumental in creating the global construction giant Shapoorji Pallonji and ably led the Tata group," Goenka said.
Nationalist Congress Party leader Supriya Sule said Mistry's death was "devastating".
"Can’t believe it. Rest in Peace Cyrus."
Shiv Sena's Priyanka Chaturvedi tweeted: "Shocked and sad to hear the news of Cyrus Mistry’s death in a road accident. Prayers for him, heartfelt condolences to his family and friends to cope with this tragic loss. Gone too soon, rest in peace."
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor looked back on a meeting he had with Mistry.
"So shocked to hear of his untimely demise," Tharoor said. "My heart goes out to his loved ones."
Cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle remembered Mistry as person with dignity and class.
"I only met Cyrus Mistry once. He was all dignity and class. Can't believe he is gone."
Supreme Court lawyer Jaiveer Shergill described Mistry's death as a "big loss to the business community".
Economist Rajiv Kumar said a talented life was cut short. "My deepest condolences to you family and prayers to the Almighty for giving them the needed strength."
Author and professor Nirmalya Kumar mourned the loss of his "dear friend and ex-boss."
"Thank you for the life lessons. Inconsolable- we shared a laugh last month on a park bench in London. RIP."
He remembered Mistry's "smarts and integrity" and thanked him for all he taught him.
"You gave me an opportunity no one else would have -- and mentored me with patience," Kumar wrote. "Let me argue in front of others which no other promoter would have tolerated. Brilliant and understated human being - will miss you very much Cyrus."
Mistry served as the chairperson of Tata Sons from 2012 to 2016. He was ousted from the group in October 2016, with the group saying its board lost confidence in him.
His ouster set the stage for a long court battle.
