The perennial debate between Delhi and Mumbai has resurfaced once again, this time sparked by a post on X by entrepreneur Bhaumik Gowande. As professionals and entrepreneurs often weigh the pros and cons of settling in different cities, Gowande's recent remarks about Mumbai's notorious traffic have ignited a fresh wave of discussion.
Gowande shared his experience after arriving at Mumbai airport, highlighting the severe traffic he encountered shortly after leaving the premises. "Landing in Mumbai after living in New Delhi and just coming outside the airport gives me the Third World Ick. God this city traffic really gives me middle-class trauma. Disgusted," Gowande wrote. Despite landing at 7:15 PM on a Thursday and leaving the airport within an hour, he detailed how the traffic prevented a quick journey home, taking him 40 minutes to cover just 600 metres from the airport.
The post quickly went viral, sparking a debate among X users. While some agreed with his frustration over Mumbai's traffic, many took issue with his description of it causing "middle-class trauma."
One user responded, "Traffic may be middle class, air quality is top class." Another sarcastically commented, "Hahaha...you are saying as if New Delhi is a first-world city!"
The Delhi-Mumbai debate, an evergreen topic among urban dwellers, was reignited by Gowande’s remarks. "You may not find the city in the best of shape. This city has been under makeover since ages but yet it is a city with life. Once you get a habit of Mumbai, it's difficult to leave. You will definitely find life & people much better," shared another user.
Comparisons between Delhi and Mumbai were frequent in the comments. One user noted, "Don't kill the vibe of Mumbai."
"Man saying like Delhi has no traffic, Mumbai and Delhi are almost the same when it comes to traffic. But when it comes to air, will always choose Mumbai. In Mumbai, at least I don't have to wear a mask 24hrs to survive," another user remarked.
However, some users did agree with Gowande's observations. "Mumbai needs a lot more flyovers. It's a nightmare to be driving in Mumbai," a user added.
Another added, "While I don't like your tone, the issues you raised are not invalid. Mumbai really needs to double up on making travel better."
