Mumbai Police books Urfi Javed over fake arrest video: ‘cheap publicity’

Mumbai Police has registered an FIR against Urfi Javed and three others for creating and sharing a video that purportedly shows the fashion influencer being arrested for wearing inappropriate clothes. The video in question, shared on social media Friday, has since been taken down. It showed two women dressed as cops arresting Javed for wearing “chote chote kapde.”

It was later revealed that the Urfi Javed ‘arrest’ video was created as promotional content for a fashion brand. However, on social media where the video was shared without any context, many assumed that Javed had actually been arrested by Mumbai Police for wearing short clothes.

Mumbai Police set the record straight and issued a clarification on Instagram, saying that police insignia and uniform were misused to create the clip. The department also said a criminal case has been registered against those involved in the misleading video.
“One can’t violate law of land for cheap publicity. A viral video of a woman being allegedly arrested by Mumbai Police, in a case of obscenity is not true - insignia & uniform have been misused,” Mumbai Police said in its Instagram post. “However, a criminal case has been registered against those involved in the misleading video, at Oshiwara Police Station under sections 171, 419, 500, 34 IPC.”

In the offending video, women dressed as cops approached Urfi Javed and asked her to accompany them to the police station. When the actor-influencer asked why, they said: ““Itne chote-chote kapde pehen ke kaun ghumta hai? (who walks around wearing such short clothes?)”

The women then accompanied Javed into a ‘police’ vehicle and took her to a police station. This whole sequence of events was orchestrated to announce a collaboration between Javed and a fashion brand.
