Two couples were caught on camera fighting over the best spot for a selfie at an observation deck in Tibet, highlighting issues among Mount Everest climbers at popular sites. The altercation, which occurred on June 25th, quickly escalated from a verbal dispute to a physical brawl - just for the perfect photograph.
The incident began innocuously enough when a tour guide asked the group to pose together on the viewing platform next to the Everest Elevation Measurement Monument. However, what should have been a picturesque moment turned into a heated confrontation.
Footage captured by onlookers and shared by local media showed the two couples, reportedly Chinese nationals, engaging in a fierce argument over their positions in the photo.
In the video, the two men can be seen exchanging punches and wrestling on the floor, while one of the women attempts to separate them. The other woman then joins the fray, kicking one of the men. The situation rapidly escalated, drawing the attention of other tourists and necessitating intervention.
The fight was eventually broken up by Everest border police who arrived at the scene. The immediate aftermath saw all four individuals involved taken into custody. It remains unclear if any of the participants sustained injuries during the brawl.
Local media have indicated that an investigation is ongoing, with authorities pledging to adhere to legal procedures and promising an update to the public once more information is available.
This incident comes at a time when China has only recently reopened access to Mount Everest from the Tibetan side for foreign climbers, following a prolonged closure due to the pandemic.
With 18 deaths last climbing season, Nepal introduced new rules this year, including the mandatory use of GPS trackers.
